  8. Example of a Previous Award Winning Abstract

THE 20-MINUTE RAPID MART-1 IMMUNOSTAIN FOR MALIGNANT MELANOMA FROZEN SECTIONS.

Arash Kimyai-Asadi, M.D.; Gabriel B. Ayala, B.S., H.t.; Leonard H. Goldberg, M.D.; Justine Vujevick, M.D.; and Ming H. Jih, M.D., Ph.D.

Mohs surgery is the ideal procedure for malignant melanoma, particularly lentigo maligna on the head and neck because of significantly lower risk of recurrence. In recent years, the MART-1 immunostain has been used as an adjunctive method to the standard hematoxylin-eosin stain because it highlights individual melanocytes, facilitating the identification of smaller foci of residual melanoma at surgical margins. Previous investigators have developed protocols for reliable MART-1 immunostaining of frozen sections, but these protocols are time-consuming, and therefore not widely utilized in Mohs laboratories.

Our aim was to report a rapid 20-minute MART-1 immunostaining protocol for frozen sections. The protocol was utilized on 20 melanomas treated with Mohs micrographic surgery. The MART-1 stain clearly highlighted normal background melanocytes, as well as melanocytic hyperplasia and malignant melanoma. Our protocol is three times faster than the 1-hour MART-1 protocol that we had be using during the previous 3 years, yet it produces slides of equal quality.

The 20-minute protocol provides a rapid and reliable method for immunostaining of malignant melanoma. The availability of more rapid immunostaining methods has improved efficiency of our Mohs laboratory and significantly reduced patient and physician waiting time. Developemnt of a more rapid protocol may also promote wider utilization of immunostaining as an adjunctive method for melanoma detection at surgical margins, and thereby may aid Mohs surgeons in reducing recurrence rates from malignant melanoma.

Membership

The American Society for Mohs Histotechnology (ASMH) was founded in 1995 as an ancillary group to the American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS). One of the requirements for membership in the ASMH is employment by an active ACMS member or membership in the ACMS.

Member benefits include: discounted registration fee for the Annual Meeting, quarterly newsletter with articles related to the field of histotechnology, histotechnician salary survey results, career listings, and the opportunity for peer interaction and information exchange throughout the year. See below for additional information on membership.

ACMS Mohs Histotechnology Quality Assurance Training Initiative

Purpose
The Mohs Histotechnology Quality Assurance (MHQA) Training initiative is designed to provide slide-preparation training to Mohs histotechnicians whose employers recommend and approve such training.

Description of Program
Training sessions will be offered each year at the ASMH Annual Meeting. In addition, Mohs College members may also make arrangements to have personalized training for their Mohs histotechnician(s). An MHQA Training Initiative Enrollment Form must then be completed and sent to the Mohs College along with payment. The standard tuition for training will be $500 for ASMH members and $750 for non-members. The amount of time spent for training will be left to the discretion of the participants; however, the Mohs College recommends an average duration of two days for each training session. Upon completion of training, the student will receive a certificate of participation from the Mohs College, and the MHQA Trainers and student will be required to fill out an assessment form to provide feedback to the College regarding the training experience. The students practice is responsible for all costs incurred (travel, food, lodging, etc.) during training. These costs are in addition to the standard tuition for training.
